We were lucky as the day we visited a free concert was about to start and we were able to stay and enjoy it. The building was completed in 1435 but the spires and interior (gothic) were not completed until the late 19th C. This cathedral has the longest nave in Scandinavia. Close to the entrance is the tomb of Carl Linnaeus, the scientist, the father of modern botany. There is a chapel that was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary that was later renovated to hold the tomb of King Gustar Vasa...outside of the chapel is a strange/poorly done wax statue of Mary.

 

It is a lovely cathedral and even though it's the tallest in Scandinavia, it does seem a little small inside. The decorations with stenciling and painting on all the walls was so delicate and beautiful. It doesn't take long to see everything inside, but it's worth a short stroll around. Plus, there are runestones all around the outside that date from 900 and 1,000.

Already from outside, the cathedral is impressive and beautiful - you can see it from pretty much everywhere. And when you go inside, it is as impressive. Considering it is really close to Stockholm, if you are there, you should really consider a visit not only to Uppsala, but to the Cathedral.

Amazing Cathedral

It is one of the oldest churches in the world. It is very beautiful with a rich history. I highly recommend to visit this place. it is the the tallest church building in Scandinavia. it is located in the center of city and near the river.

Beautiful Nordic church with a lot of history

One of the main attractions of Uppsala is also the tallest church in the Nordic countries. The towers were added and reconstructed due to fire much later than the original part of the church. Originally built as a Catholic Cathedral, the church has long been the primary location of the Church of Sweden. With several different constructions and additions, the style of the church is primarily Gothic but a few different styles blend together to create what you see today. It is not quite as ornate and opulent as so many of the large cathedrals of the center of Europe but it is still a beautiful site worth some time to visit.

The Treasury and the largest cathedral in the Nordics are not to be missed.
